The role of cyber security in advancing UK’s technology industry

As the UK focuses on establishing itself as a tech leader by 2030, strengthening cyber security is critical to protect against rising threats to new technologies and vital infrastructure.

Emerging tech like AI and the IoT have significantly transformed all industries within the UK, generating new opportunities for economic development and progress. With the opportunities comes several potential risks, as new tech solutions create a range of vulnerabilities and attack scenarios, which if utilised, could create significant disruption.

The possible cyber threats facing the UK are broad and continue to evolve. Businesses large and small, must have a strategy to protect their assets and defend against new threats.

One of the major cyber threats facing the UK is attacks on its critical national infrastructure (CNI). The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) explains that this infrastructure is responsible for electricity, transport, internet and other vital provisions and is under significant threat from other groups.
Recent studies indicate that over 75% of UK businesses have experienced cyber-attacks regularly. Furthermore, over 25% of UK industrial firms have stopped operations in the past year due to a significant attack. Research from the NCSC, indicates that the UK is the third most targeted country by cyber-attacks, falling just behind the USA and Ukraine, with rising geopolitical tensions impacting the frequency of cyber attacks.

As digitilisation accelerates, the rise of new technology solutions and increased adoption of AI are increasing the attack surface, especially in vital sectors and infrastructure, increasing their vulnerability to new cyber attacks. There has also been a rise in disruptive activities associated with cyber attacks on suppliers, who may use weaker security platforms.

As cybercriminals become more intelligent and innovative, the software supply chain is most notably experiencing further attacks. According to Gartner, 45% of businesses worldwide will have experienced supply chain cyber attacks by 2025. Protecting supply chains is a critical focus area for all UK businesses
Why is the UK a notable target for cyber security attacks?

Most businesses appreciate the necessity of managing cyber risks in an evolving landscape. This is particularly true in the UK, where research suggests UK businesses are more likely to experience a cyber attack compared to other neighbouring countries. Recognised as a global economic and financial hub, the UK attracts the attention of possible cyber attacks. The UK Government has prioritised the development of cyber security strategies and policies. This approach is supported by the National Cyber Strategy, which shows a strong recognition of the importance of delivering structured cyber security measures. The strategy incorporates a series of measures enabling the UK to continue being a cyber power leader, capable of protecting and promoting its values in the cyber industry.

To strengthen the UK’s resilience to potential cyber-attacks, the government must work closely with the private sector and the cyber security market. Shifting the challenges of cyber security from individuals to businesses more equipped to manage cyber risks is critical. This approach is vital in creating an environment where cyber security becomes a priority and an opportunity for cyber security organisations to present their value.

The Government and businesses across the UK understand that to ensure they benefit from new technologies, a definitive cyber security strategy is essential. The UK is an attractive country for technology investment. It is home to an experienced talent pool, leading universities, and contains over three million people working in the UK tech industry. Furthermore, the UK’s rapidly growing tech industry has enabled the development of a culture of innovation, allowing the UK to become very appealing for investment in Europe and worldwide. Combining this with the rising demand for cyber security partners, especially with the increased cyber threats, the UK has become a very attractive region for cyber security companies to establish and build their business.
